Bring cash or checks to Herndon Swim Club on first day of class. Estimate your child's swimming level, adjustments can be made by instructors if they are above or below.

Level 1
This level will allow swimmers to become comfortable in the water on their own. The basics of floating, treading water, and blowing bubbles are covered. Accomplishing these along with an introduction to flutter kick and freestyle arms will give them the required skills to advance to Level 2.

Level 2
At this level, swimmers should feel confident getting in the water from the side of the pool by jumping in. The combined use of flutter kick and freestyle arms will introduce them to stroke swimming. Also, elementary backstroke (where the arms go from the side, to armpits, to perpendicular to the body, and back to the side) is a low energy stroke that is good for the swimmers to know in an emergency. As these skills are worked on, the swimmer should learn to tread water for a longer period of time as well. Accomplishing these skills, along with an introduction to regular backstroke will give them the required skills to advance to Level 3.

Level 3
As the swimmers advance in freestyle and elementary backstroke, they should also learn regular backstroke. At this level, they will learn to swim the whole length of the pool. Their stroke does not need to be perfect, but should be sufficient to safely and independently get them to complete a 25 meter freestyle and elementary backstroke. Again, they should learn to tread water for a longer period of time. Also, an introduction to diving will be accomplished through learning sitting and kneeling dives.

Level 4
Once swimmers are capable of independently swimming freestyle and backstroke, they will become more focused on technique in this level. This is a good class for beginners on swim team. The proper racing dive will be taught, along with an introduction to dolphin kick.
